Why it matters

Surfing supports physical activity, mental well-being, and connection to natural environments. It aligns closely with the aims of Blue Health Prescribing. But despite its potential, it remains overlooked in public health because there is limited data and no standard delivery model.

This project is designed to change that.

It will measure the physical and mental health impact of recreational surfing in both wave pool and ocean settings. It will evaluate outcomes over time, assess delivery across different contexts, and generate cost data that helps funders and services plan with confidence.

Alongside the evidence, it will produce practical tools for implementation: outcome measures, cost summaries, policy briefs, and guidance for delivery and scale.

As Blue Health Prescribing moves forward, this research ensures that surfing is ready to be part of it, backed by data, shaped for services, and built for long-term impact.

Outcomes and Contributions to the field

  • Clear data on surfing’s physical and mental health impact

  • Tested programme model with outcomes, delivery process, and cost analysis

  • Templates, policy briefs, and a toolkit for safe delivery in different health systems

  • A public research library and blog that connect evidence to practice
